Spanish for Kids Likely to Help in the Long Run
Spanish for Kids? - Some people seem to be on the fence about whether or not they should teach their children another language, in addition to English, in the United States. Regardless, many high schools and middle schools require their students to take part in second language programs in school. There was a Newsweek article published in February of 2006 which stated, “A child taught a second language after the age of ten or so is unlikely ever to speak it like a native.”. Rather, research in the area of bilingual children has shown that the earlier a child is exposed to a second (or third!) language, the better the child’s odds are that they will be able to completely adopt and utilize both languages - which means teaching the kids Spanish prior to middle and high school is a better idea.
I happen to agree with the research. I have started teaching Spanish for kids to my own children prior to them entering Kindergarten, and so far the results have been pretty remarkable. I don’t know if this is because of the changes which occur in the brain as a result of the child entering puberty - which is an argument some researchers make as to why children are so unlikely to be able to master another language at a later point in life - but I do know that, so far, the approach of teaching Spanish for kids to my children at a young age is really working out.
In July 2008, while campaigning around the country, then Presidential candidate Barack Obama addressed the people saying that children across the nation should learn to speak another language. He discussed several options, including teaching Spanish for kids and French for kids, but I believe that Spanish is more useful when considering the amount of immigrants that come over to the United States from countries that speak other languages. My hope in teaching Spanish for kids is that the children will be able to communicate better and foster deeper relationships with other children and adults as they grow up.
So in summary Spanish for kids is a great idea - if you want to get your children a great start in learning Spanish look here for a great resource.
